House of Faust

Czech republic, Prague
The Renaissance-style building is located on Charles Square and includes a large garden. The house is surrounded by a mass of legends associated with its guests. Alchemists and physicists have lived here for centuries, the most famous of which is the scientist and warlock Johann Faust. In the XIV century, the site on which the Faust House is located was "occupied" by the palace of the royal dynasty of the Přemyslids. One of its representatives, Vaclav, was interested in the natural sciences, and became the first in the list of residents of the house, about whom legends are composed. The building was empty for a long time. From the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, the Faust House served as an educational institution for the deaf and dumb. Since 1903, the building has housed a hospital. During the Second World War, as a result of the bombing, a shell hit the Faust House, but the resulting fire was successfully extinguished by the hospital staff. The house still serves the health care of the Czech Republic.

There are many hypotheses as to why the house is called Faustian. According to legend, it was in this house that the scientist and sorcerer Johann Faust signed his contract, hence Mephistopheles sent the doctor to hell and did so with such force that he punched a hole in the ceiling. Walking through the picturesque Charles Square, it is difficult not to pay attention to the pink house, stylized in the Baroque style. This building, built in 1617, is called the House of Faust, which is why it primarily attracts lovers of mysticism.
