Thun-Hohenstein Palace

Thun-Hohenstein Palace
Czech republic, Prague
The Baroque building is located in the center of Prague, on Nerudova Street. The facade has a portal decorated with two carved eagles and figures of the ancient Roman god Jupiter and his wife, the goddess Juno. The first mention of a palace on this site dates back to 1558. The current one was built at the beginning of the 18th century for Count Vincent Kolovrat. So, above the middle window above the portal you can see the family coat of arms of the Kolovrats. After Maria Anna Kolowrat married Josef Vaclav Thun Hohenstein in 1768, the palace became the property of this family. In 1924, the last heir of the family sold the mansion to the Italian government, and now the country's embassy in the Czech Republic is located within its walls.

The palace was built in the 1710s by the outstanding Baroque architect Jan Blazei Santini and is one of his best works. Matthias Bernard Brown took part in the sculptural design of the main portal. Figures of two great eagles, who play the role of traditional Atlanteans - a reminder of the first owners of the palace Kolovrat. The eagle was an element of their coat of arms. The sculptures of Jupiter and Juno above the portal also belong to the works of Brown's studio. They were made around 1750.
