Temple of the Virgin Mary in front of Týn, Kostel Panny Marie před Týnem, Týnský chrám
Czech republic, Prague
The Church of the Virgin Mary in front of Týn is the dominant feature of Prague's Old Town Square. The construction of the cathedral began in the 14th century, and was finally completed only in 1511. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Tyn Church became not only the spiritual center of the Old Town, but also the main Hussite church in Prague. In 1621, the cathedral passed to the Jesuits. At this time, a golden bowl, a symbol of the Reformation, and the inscription "Truth wins" were seized from the main statue. The great astronomer Tycho Brahe is buried in the cathedral.

Perhaps the most beautiful temple built by human hands. Every architectural detail of the temple is perfect. It just needs to be seen.

The temple was built in front of Tyn - - a fenced place for settling carts and determining the amount of duties from foreign traders who came to trade in Prague. It was demolished a long time ago, but the name remained. This cathedral in Prague is the most important religious building on the right bank of the Vltava. Visible in any weather from anywhere in Prague, the two sharp towers of the Tyn Church rise above the red roofs of houses and, thanks to additional towers, resemble the two crowns of Prague.

The front of this church looks very odd. It is covered by other buildings built in front of it, which, apparently, were elevated earlier. However, the upper part of the church and its interior are quite elegant. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to go on an excursion inside (as a wedding ceremony was held in the church), but we really liked what we managed to see from the outside.
