Potsdamer Platz has a difficult history. Before the war, it was one of the most popular squares in Europe. In the 19th century, there was a railway station on it, and at the beginning of the 20th, it was also the terminus of the Berlin subway. Potsdamerplatz is also famous for having the first traffic light in Berlin. But during the war years, the area was destroyed by the Allied troops. In the 60s, the Berlin Wall rose on it, after which the remains of the architecture around the square were gradually destroyed.
And only in the 90s the square found a new life. Over the course of 10 years, several modern buildings were erected around Podstamskaya Square, including the Kollhoff Tower, the Sony Center and others.

Modern square of the old town

The area is very modern, with glass skyscrapers. Busy place with metro station. If you go a little deeper into the square, among the houses, you find yourself in a shopping area, where there are many cafes and clothing stores. By the way, everything is open there until 21:00 (the whole city seems to die out at 18:00 - everything closes, but here you can spend time in the evening).→

An interesting construction on an even more interesting Potsdam Square

At the beginning of the 20th century, Potsdamerplatz was the central square of Berlin and the busiest European crossroads. Therefore, in 1924 a traffic light (which was invented in New York) was installed here. The original has not been preserved, now there is a copy made in 1997 on the square.→
