Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus, Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew
Germany, Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt Cathedral (Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew) began to be erected in the 8th century on the site of an earlier church building. From 1562 to 1792, the Cathedral hosted the coronation ceremonies of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Twice in its history the cathedral was significantly destroyed, but each time it was restored. The most valuable relic kept here is the upper part of the skull of the Apostle Bartholomew, the patron saint of the cathedral. Among the valuable fragments in the interior of the church are Van Dyck's Lamentation of Christ, frescoes with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, altars, bas-reliefs and stained glass windows of various eras.
In the 1990s, the grave of a noble girl who lived in the 7th century was discovered near the cathedral, and a slab was installed for her. If you climb the stairs with 328 steps to the observation deck of the cathedral, you can enjoy the panorama of the city from a height of about 80 meters.
