Guardhouse Square

Hauptwache
Germany, Frankfurt am Main
The guardhouse is the central square of Frankfurt am Main, so named because of the building of the main guard, built in 1730. Later, the building housed a police station with prison cells. The building of the guardhouse, which suffered during the brutal bombing of 1944, was rebuilt in 1954. The area was rebuilt in 1967 - during the construction of the metro, in 1978 - during the construction of a suburban train station. In its current form, the square is a ground and underground pedestrian zone with shops and cafes, metro and transport stations. In addition to the baroque building of the Guardhouse, the rest of the buildings are built in a modern style. To the east of the square is the famous Zeil shopping street.
