Do you know the history of one of the German castles - Marienburg Castle and why no one has lived in the castle for 80 years? If you drive from the south towards Hannover, then from a distance you can see him standing on a mountain densely overgrown with forests. Marienburg was built between 1858 and 1867. King George V of Hanover gave his wife Marie the castle as a summer residence for her 39th birthday. More precisely, initially only the territory was a gift. Queen Mary herself supervised the construction. The work lasted over 7 years. The building of the castle was then supplemented with a knight's hall with heated floors and a palace kitchen with running warm water. Since the king was blind, he would never be able to see the impressive structure, so a special cork model was made for him. But he not only could not see him, but also live there, as he fled into exile in Austria with his children because of the political situation.
After that, the castle was uninhabited for almost 80 years. Only in 1945 did the crown prince come to the castle with his family.

Unfortunately, in October 2005, representatives of the family put up for auction most of the artistic treasures of Marienburg - about 2.000 objects. The proceeds amounted to about 44 million euros, and the proceeds from the auction were directed to a special fund of the Hanoverian dynasty. Not so long ago, disputes broke out between members of this noble family about the future fate of the castle, which is in need of expensive repairs, which, according to experts, will require more than 27 million euros. In 2018, the crown prince decided to sell the castle to the government, as the maintenance of the castle was costly. The Federal Parliament allocated money for the restoration of the castle, and family paintings and valuables of the Hanoverian dynasty were transferred to the State Museum of Hanover.
It is a pity that they did not keep everything intact for future generations and for everyone who would like to see the history of this castle and family.

Today the castle exists at the expense of the museum enterprise, gastronomy, rent for private celebrations and events. The former stables and carriage houses were converted into a restaurant. The main tower of the Marienburg castle is open to visitors, you can climb it during the tour. From a height of 44 meters offers an impressive view of the surroundings of the castle.
