Monument to the Pied Piper

Pied Piper Fountain, Rattenfänger von Hameln
Germany, Hameln
The Pied Piper Monument is located on Osterstrasse in Hameln, not far from the Pied Piper House. This memorial fountain was donated to the city in 2001 by C. W. Niemeyer. The sculpture is dedicated to the hero of the medieval German legend that made Hemeln famous. According to legend, the rat catcher was hired by the locals to rid them of the rats. With the help of his magic pipe, the musician took away all the rodents from the city and returned for a reward, but the inhabitants decided not to pay him. In retaliation, the rat-catcher returned and in the same way took all the children out of the city.

A bronze monument to the Pied Piper was erected in memory of the main urban legend that glorified little Hameln. So, it was the distant 1284, the city was actively attacked by rats. The authorities no longer knew how to deal with it. But then a man appeared in Hameln who offered to lime all the rats for a substantial fee. The municipality agreed. The rat-catcher played his pipe, took all the rats out of the city and drowned them in the river. But the city authorities got greedy and did not pay the Pied Piper for his work.
