Mesquite

Cordoba Cathedral Mosque, Mezquita
Spain, Cordoba
The Mesquite, formerly a mosque, now a Roman Catholic cathedral, is the most outstanding monument of the Umayyad dynasty. The cathedral mosque was built at the end of the 8th century, it is located in the city center, next to the embankment of the Guadalquivir River. Mesquita is known for its double arches and galleries of columns made of marble and onyx. The mosque is richly decorated with gilded prayer niches, stone patterns, chandeliers and lamps. In 1236, Cordoba was recaptured by Christians and the mosque was consecrated into a Christian temple. Until the 18th century, the temple was rebuilt, changes were made. The Muslim minaret was turned into a tower, chapels were completed and an orange garden was laid out.

Visited during a tour! Impressed by the interior and colors. Very competent speech of the guide, Maria, was on top. Externally, the building is impressive, massiveness, grandeur. Photographed with all the doors!

More than 1000 columns made of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. The first columns were taken from the temple that existed on this site earlier, as well as other Roman buildings. An innovation was the double arches that support the immense weight of the roof, yet create the airy space of a palm-fringed oasis in the desert. Water, palm trees, oranges - what could be more desirable for the children of the desert.

this is the undoubted calling card of Cordoba, as well as one of the brightest sights of all Andalusia. Mezquita is the largest mosque built in Europe, and in the Middle Ages it was considered the second largest mosque in the world. In addition, the Cordoba Mosque is generally recognized as the most grandiose and beautiful mosque in Spain, inherited from the Moorish period. Its significance and grandiosity cannot be overestimated, because it was Cordoba in the 10th century that was the capital of the caliphate formed on the territory of Spain, which ruled all the emirates, which at that time belonged to the Muslims of Spain.
