Town Hall Square

Place de l'Hotel de Ville
France, Aix-en-Provence
Town Hall Square is the center of the Old Town. Here is the building of the Town Hall, built in 1661, as well as the Clock Tower, erected in 1510 on the basis of the Roman gates of the city. On the south side of the square is the building of the Grain Market with a magnificent pediment, decorated with a sculptural composition. Another attraction is the fountain, installed in 1755.

The Town Hall building was built in the 14th century. On the right side of the Town Hall is the Clock Tower, dating back to 1661. Its foundation was the former Roman gate of the city. From under the dial of the Tower, wooden figurines representing the four seasons periodically emerge. Another attraction of the Town Hall Square is a fountain built in 1755. The central element of the fountain is a Roman column. It was this fountain that became the starting point for dividing the city into districts, since it was believed that it was located in its very center.
