The original bridge, built from 1177 to 1185, was an engineering miracle that stretched out 900 meters with 22 arches. He connected the Avignon to the city of Vilnev-Le Avignon on the opposite bank of the Rona. The arches were designed to resist the strong currents of the Ron. But this did not save the bridge from constant floods. By the XVII century, the bridge suffered significant damage, and its maintenance has become more and more difficult. In 1669, catastrophic floods destroyed several arches, making the bridge impassable.→
