The Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris is located in the Hotel Cluny. This is a 15th century Gothic mansion in the center of the Latin Quarter. The museum exhibits a large collection of household items and art of the Middle Ages: tapestries, sculptures made of wood and stone of the XII-XIII centuries, ivory items, stained-glass windows. The most famous museum exhibits are the cycle of six espaliers of the end of the 15th century “The Lady with the Unicorn” and the original statues of Notre Dame Cathedral.

The museum building is also a valuable exhibit. In the 13th century, on the site of part of the Roman baths of the 3rd century, it was decided to build a monastery of the Order of Cluny. Two centuries later, Abbe Jacques of Ambauz built a mansion next to the monastery. Hence the full name of the complex - "Museum of the Middle Ages - the baths and the mansion of Cluny." During the French Revolution, the monastery was nationalized. Later, a private collection was housed here, which was bought by the state in 1843.

Authentic Cluny Museum

This museum is one of the rare ancient monuments in Paris. It contains 23 thousand works and objects from Roman Gaul to the 16th century, the richest collection of stained glass windows in France (more than 230 panels, medallions and fragments of stained glass windows of the 12th-16th centuries), as well as a significant collection of tapestries with plots on religious and everyday topics with the most famous “Lady with a Unicorn”, items of jewelry of the Middle Ages are exhibited (works made of gold, silver, copper, enamel, stones from the treasuries of the abbeys and kings of Western Europe), and much more.→
