Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch of Glanum
France, Saint-Remy-de-Provence
The triumphal arch stood next to the north gate of the ancient Roman city of Glanum, next to the mausoleum, and was erected as a symbol of Roman power and authority. The arch was built at the end of the reign of Augustus Caesar, in the first half of the 1st century AD. The monument is decorated with various sculptures telling about the terrible fate of the enemies of the empire and the greatness of Rome. The upper part of the vault, including the inscriptions, is missing.

On the southern edge of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, on the opposite side of the road from the Monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Musol, on Avenue Vincent Van Gogh is the Arc de Triomphe. It was erected in honor of the conquest of Marseille and led to Glanum, from which it is now separated by a highway. Over time, the Arch has lost some of the reliefs that adorn it, telling about the conquest of Gaul by Caesar. Access to the Arch is free. If you are interested in ancient Roman themes, you can separately visit Glanum, where excavations have been carried out for almost a hundred years.
