new bridge

Pont Neuf, Pont de Pierre
France, Toulouse
New bridge (Pont Neuf or Pont de Pierre and Grand Pont) - a bridge in Toulouse. It was built for quite a long time from 1544 to 1632. The bridge was opened by King Louis XIV in 1659.
Construction was hampered by the strong floods of the Garonne River and the instability of its bottom. The design of this bridge was innovative for its time. Nowy Most is considered a Renaissance masterpiece. In particular, it was free from houses and shops that cluttered the bridges of those times. The architects also applied a number of new and borrowed Roman construction solutions. Thanks to this, the Pont Neuf was the only bridge in Toulouse that survived the terrible flood of 1875, during which not only all the other bridges in the city (even later in construction), but also 1,400 houses of Toulouse were destroyed.
Since the left bank of the river is several meters lower than the right bank, the New Bridge is not symmetrical. The longest arch is the third from the right bank. In total, the bridge has 7 arches, its length is 220 m.

Despite its name, this bridge is one of the oldest structures in the city. Its construction began in 1544 to replace the dilapidated old bridge, and on October 19.1659, it was inaugurated by King Louis XIV of France. The bridge has 7 arches of different height and width, its length is 220 m, width is 30 m. Its unique technology made it possible to survive numerous floods. The bridge is equipped with breakwaters and drainage systems to preserve the structure. In one of the round holes, a sculpture of a humanoid creature of bright red color is visible.
