Basilica of Notre Dame de la Dorade

Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade
France, Toulouse
Basilica Notre-Dame de la Daurade (French: Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade) is a Catholic church in Toulouse, France.
This church has a very complex history. It was founded in 410, when Flavius Honorius Augustus, the first emperor of the Western Roman Empire, allowed the conversion of pagan temples to Christianity. The original building of Notre Dame de la Dorade was a temple dedicated to Apollo.
Located on the banks of the Garonne river. Since 1963 it has been a historical monument of France.
In the 5th or 6th century, the church was rebuilt and decorated with golden mosaics. Hence the name of the basilica. Deaurat from the Latin language - gold.
At first, the church was used by the Visigoths, who adhered to Arian Christianity. Then she passed into the hands of the Catholics after the Battle of Vuille in 507. It further became a Benedictine monastery in the 9th century.
After a period of decline that began in the 15th century, the basilica was demolished in 1761 to make way for the construction of Toulouse's coastal wharfs. A new church was later built, but the monastery was closed during the French Revolution, turning into a tobacco factory.
The icon of the Black Madonna was in the basilica. The original icon was stolen in the 15th century, and its replacement was burned by revolutionaries in 1799 in Capitol Square. The icon from 1807 presented today is a copy of the Madonna of the 15th century. Blackened by many candles, the Madonna has been known since the 16th century as Notre Dame La Noire.
The current building of the basilica was built in the 19th century.

You will not immediately find the entrance to this church. It is located on the side, as if entering the entrance of the house. But the more unexpected to see a beautiful interior. Its name is associated with the priceless golden mosaics that are inside the temple (deauro - gilding). This church is also called the Church of the Black Madonna. The main value of the temple is the statue of the Black Madonna. The Mother of God has been revered since ancient times, but it is not known why her images were made black.
