Fortress Rabat

Akhaltsikhe fortress
Georgia, Akhalsikhe
Akhaltsikhe fortress was first mentioned in the 16th century. The city of Akhaltsikhe was of great strategic importance and was surrounded on all sides by Muslim countries, but was taken by the Turkish army only in 1752. The Turks gave it their name - Rabat, which means "fortified place". After the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829 the fortress and the city passed to the Russian Empire. The fortress was restored in 2011. In the upper part there is a museum of Samtskhe-Javakheti, a mosque and an Orthodox church of the 9th century. In the lower part there are cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops and wine cellars.

Was! This attraction is included in the tourist routes as a given! Borjomi Akhaltsikhe! The fortress has been restored! Beautiful! Examined completely. I did not regret that I was, but the second time there is no desire to go. I did not have a feeling of admiration for antiquity and the tragic history that our cultural monuments are full of! Refurbished is Refurbished!

Traveling around Georgia, my friends and I ended up in the city of Akhaltsikhe, one might say, by accident. We went to see the famous cave city of Vardzia, and Akhaltsikhe is the nearest big city to it. I already happened to be here a few years ago and then the Rabat fortress consisted of only a few old walls and was actually a ruin. Imagine my surprise when we saw a real huge citadel with powerful walls, towers and a beautiful well-kept park inside. We spent several hours there with pleasure and wanted to stay longer to see the evening views of the fortress and the lights of the city, but the trip was already planned and we had to go further.

I was lucky to visit the fortress and see it both at night and in the morning light. Definitely recommend to visit! The fortress is divided into two parts: commercial - there is a tourist center, restaurants, a souvenir shop, a hotel with a wonderful spa center, which by the way can be visited by anyone, regardless of whether he lives in a hotel or not. The commercial part is open every day at any time. Access to this section is free. The historical part of the fortress is open from 9 am to 7 pm, the entrance costs 7 GEL per person, at the tourist information center they can offer you a guide.

The fortress complex is located on a mountain above the city of Akhaltsikhe in Meskheti. The word "rabat" means any fortified place, and indeed, the fortress was built in the classical tradition of that time. The territory of the fortress is quite large, and in the hour of time allotted to us, we only had time to run through the main places. This fortress has been restored to such an extent that it is possible to shoot films and make professional photo shoots in it. It seems that this is a living city, only for some reason it has become empty.
