Gonio-Apsaros fortress

Gonio fortress, Gonio fortress
Georgia, Batumi
Gonio Fortress (formerly called Apsare or Asparunt) was a Roman outpost in Adjara, on the Black Sea, 15 km south of Batumi, at the mouth of the Chorokhi River. The village is located 5 kilometers north of the Turkish border.

The first mention of the fortress belongs to Pliny the Younger (I century AD). In the 2nd century AD, it was a well-fortified Roman city in Colchis. Later fell under the influence of Byzantium. The name "Gonio" was first mentioned in a report by the Trebizond historian Michael Panaret in the 14th century. For some time there was a place of Genoese trade. In 1547, Gonio became part of the Ottoman Empire, this continued until 1878, when, after the Treaty of San Stefano, Adjara became part of the Russian Empire.

The fortress is not large, but it seems that the apostle Matthew is buried here (the grave is not allowed to be dug up). Entrance fee - 3 GEL. I was lucky, they let me and a few other "latecomers" in after closing (18-00) for free. The excavations are underway. The treasure was found in due time. As evidence of antiquity, an interesting attraction.
