Zeus cave

Psychro Cave, Dikte Cave, Psychro Cave, Dikti Cave
Greece, Agios Nikolaos
The Cave of Zeus is located on the north side of the Dikti mountain range in Crete, near the village of Psychro, 50 kilometers from Heraklion. The cave is located at an altitude of 1024 meters above sea level. It consists of several interconnected rooms, one of which contains an underground lake. The descent into the cave is carried out using a metal staircase.

Diktea Cave, as it is also called, is one of the most famous sights of the island of Crete. According to legend, Rhea, the mother of the Olympian gods, hid here from her husband Kronos, who was eaten by their children. Rhea gave birth to Zeus and deceived her husband by giving him a stone wrapped in a diaper instead of a child.
The cave was discovered by Joseph Hadzidakis in 1886. In 1896 the excavations were continued by Sir John Evans. Altars, clay figurines dedicated to Zeus, as well as ceramics from different eras, starting from the 30th century BC, were found in the cave. Finds indicate that the cave was used for the worship of Zeus for a long time. All finds have been donated to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Ashmolean Museum. A sacrificial altar has been preserved in the vestibule of the cave.
