Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Greece, Heraklion
The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion is one of the largest museums in Greece dedicated to Minoan art. Its exposition contains the main, most important exhibits related to the Minoan civilization of Crete.

The history of the museum begins in 1883, with a simple collection of artifacts. A separate building was erected in 1904-1912, in 1964 another wing was added. Today, the museum has twenty rooms containing exhibits collected from all over Crete.

The museum has two floors, on the first floor there are 13 rooms, on the second floor there are fragments of the original frescoes of the Minoan Palace in Knossos. The exhibits are viewed in chronological order. The exposition covers more than 3000 years: from the Neolithic (5000-2500 BC) to the finds of the Post-Palace period (2000-1700 BC).

This museum has a fantastic collection of artifacts, including the Phaistos Disc! The Minoans worshiped the Moon! Structuring the text of the Phaistos disc shows that it was copied by the manufacturer of the disc, either from inscriptions made in the form of three double-sided axes, or from inscriptions on similar axes themselves (labrys) from palace or cave sanctuaries. The text is a list of dedications of the main rulers of Crete to the lunar deity. One of these axes, the largest, with four blades, may have been used as a kind of lunar calendar.

Really beautiful, bright exhibits, but I, as not a big fan of history, got bored after half an hour. I would recommend reading about everything in advance, in some colorful literature, and then, already interested, go and see.

Some of the exhibits presented here have carefully carried their history for 5000 years. Many are very rare and valuable, it's scary to sneeze here : ) Without a guide - I do not advise, the museum will come to life if you are led through it. Plus, without English or Greek, you yourself will not read anything here.

This is not just a museum, it is a whole immersion in the Minoan civilization. There is an amazing atmosphere, amazing monuments of that culture and way of life. Amazing tour guide. I note that the pictures do not need permission or a separate fee. The child also liked it (grade 6, the history of the ancient world, all things ... ) Visit from 8 to 8 in the evening. Do not come before closing - you will regret that you did not come earlier and a lot of time wasted, which could be spent with pleasure and benefit.

Service - the museum staff are very friendly and welcoming, the exhibition itself, the exhibits - shake with their ancient, one might say "rotten" antiquity). This is just to think - the 2nd millennium BC ! ! Insanely interesting, the guide is very erudite and not only in his field. Be sure to take a look here. You won't regret it, one hundred percent.

This is a fairly compact museum by the standards of Moscow or St. Petersburg, which contains original frescoes from the Knossos palace, ceramics, ritual objects and gold jewelry from both the Minoan and Hellenistic periods of Crete. However, even if the most ordinary person, you will still be amazed by the finest decorations made by the hands of the Minoan masters and their faces. Believe me, it's better not to go to Knossos, made in the 20th century, but to go to this museum.
