Ancient city of Mycenae

mycenae
Greece, Mycenae
Mycenae is an ancient city in Argolis, one of the centers of Mycenaean culture, later of Greek civilization. Dated to the second millennium BC. e. It is located 90 km southwest of Athens near the village of Mykines. Currently in ruins.

According to legend, the city was built by Perseus. In the pre-antique period, Mycenae was one of the major centers of the Aegean civilization, which died as a result of the eruption of the Santorini volcano on the island of Thira in the Mediterranean Sea.

Before the construction of fortresses and cities, the Mycenaeans buried their kings in complex "dome" tombs - "tholos", built of huge stone slabs and shaped like giant domes.

The Acropolis in Mycenae was a kind of treasury in which city relics were kept, the most significant temples were also located here. This part of the ancient Greek city was well fortified and was a refuge in wartime. Alas, now only the ruins of the once impressive structure remain. Well, except for the lion gate with a beautiful bas-relief above the entrance and the tomb of Agamemnom, which I wrote about separately. The ruins of the Necropolis are unlikely to impress you with anything, it is better to spend your time visiting the Archaeological Museum, which is located next to the Acropolis.
