Monolithos Castle

Castle of Monolithos
Greece, Rhodes
Monolithos is a small village 30 km from Prasonisi. Behind the village is a Venetian castle built on top of a 100-meter cliff. It was built in 1480 by the Knights of the Order of Saint John to protect the island from attacks. Throughout its history, the castle has never been conquered. Now the castle is badly damaged, but it offers a magnificent view of the sea and two islands opposite. Inside the fortress there are two chapels that are no longer in use. Access to the castle is via a staircase carved into the rock.

I traveled a lot and saw many sights worth spending time, or even several days, but such a spectacle is worth visiting this place again. The stunningly beautiful castle on a high hill on the west coast is not just a breath of some kind of peace, cleanliness, inaccessibility, but something more. I think if a person is lost in this world and is trying to find the very thread, it is worth coming here. Mountain air, juniper, pine trees and very beautiful views ...in a word, wonderful.

On the way to the place, everyone lays out pyramids of stones. The tradition or action is not supported by anything, just everyone sees the pyramids and does the same, wanting to leave their contribution. It looks funny. Admission is free and there is a church there. At the foot there is a shop, parking, where you can leave the car if you come on your own.

I will just leave this review here so tourists don't waste their time visiting this place. There is nothing left of the castle and calling the ruins a "castle" is not entirely correct. Unremarkable, faded, uninteresting ruins. You will spend time and money to get there, and emotionally it will not pay off in any way. Plus, there is no special infrastructure here. Yes, the views are nothing but that's all you can get when you come here.

It is very scary, because there are cliffs around, which for the most part are not fenced in any way. You should come with children only in dry weather, because cliffs up to 10 meters high are by no means safe when slippery. The fortress is small, a couple of walls remained from it, the rest are ruins. On the other hand, there are very beautiful views.

Worth a visit to enjoy the wonderful sea views. The castle is in ruins, but the top is really very beautiful. The ascent took about 7 minutes. There is a good restaurant in front of the castle where you can have a bite to eat. The prices there are reasonable. Be careful when climbing up, there is crumbling rock.
