The first mention of this fortress is in documents from 1300. Built on a 37-meter high rock, it is separated from the city by its construction. Above the entrance to this grandiose fortress, a Latin inscription is carved: “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro” - Freedom is not sold for all the blessings of the world - the motto of the Dubrovnik Republic. It is currently the most beautiful outdoor stage of Dubrovnik and its Summer International Festival. Shakespeare plays are played on this natural stage.
