St. Stephen's Basilica

Szent István-bazilika, St. Stephen's Basilica
Hungary, Budapest
Stephen's Basilica is a Catholic cathedral in Budapest, the largest church in the Hungarian capital. The Budapest Basilica is the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, together with the Basilica of St. Adalbert, and the co-cathedral of the Primate of Hungary. The cathedral is 87.4 meters long, 55 meters wide and 96 meters high. Along with the parliament building (the height of both buildings is the same - 96 meters) - the tallest building in Budapest. The Basilica of St. Stephen, together with the Basilica of St. Adalbert in Esztergom and the Basilica of Eger, is one of the three largest churches in the country.

That the largest temple of the Hungarian capital is striking in its beauty and grandeur is understandable. But here's some worldly advice for you: if you want to enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings of Budapest, instead of the Ferris wheel, you should climb one of the towers of the basilica. Firstly, it is higher, secondly, you don’t have to look at the world through spitting glass windows, as in a Ferris wheel, and, finally, climbing the tower is also cheaper. If I'm not mistaken, in July 2019 - 1000 forints (this is a little less than 100 UAH).

The basilica is named after the first king of Hungary, Stephen (Stephen). On the bell tower of this church is the largest bell in Hungary, and the height of the basilica is 96 meters, which makes it, together with the Parliament building, the tallest historic buildings in Budapest. The interiors of the basilica impress with their luxury: there is a marble finish, and a mosaic of the finest work, and stained glass. Sculptures of the patron saint of the church, King Stephen, are above the gates to the temple and in the main altar, around which are five bronze bas-reliefs depicting scenes from his life.

Grandiose. Majestic. Monumental. The largest and most beautiful temple in Budapest, which keeps the holy right hand of King Stephen. The situation with paying for a visit is constantly changing - for periods the entrance is made free, and for periods a donation to the temple becomes mandatory. Photography without a flash is allowed. There is an observation deck (for a fee). Access is possible by stairs and elevator. In the evenings, organ music concerts are held in the temple (it is better to check the schedule and prices on the spot).

I visit Budapest often. And most of the time I spend near the Basilica of St. Stephen. Once even lived in a hotel nearby. The basilica is one of the first impressions of a once-novice tourist, but interest in it does not disappear. In addition to viewing the beautiful interiors, there are quite often, it seems, organ music concerts are held 2 times a week. Here I have a flyer with a cost of 450 forints. Be sure to see the shrine with the holy relics of St. Stephen. Be sure to climb the tower and admire the handsome Budapest from a height.
