Temple of Lakshmi Narayana

Laxmi Narayan Mandir, Birla Mandir Temple
India, Delhi
The luxurious temple complex "Lakshmi-Narayana" is dedicated to the wife of Vishnu, the goddess of abundance and happiness - Lakshmi. The temple was built in 1939 with funds donated by a wealthy family of Indian industrialists. The architecture of the temple is one of the finest examples of traditional temple architecture in India. The bright colors of the marble facade, the abundance of decor and exquisite carvings, gold trim, beautiful paintings inside and outside the temple convey the character of the deity in whose honor it was created. According to the will of Mahatma Gandhi, who solemnly opened the temple, followers of any religion and class can visit it.

The temple is small and you can see it slowly in just half an hour, but in order to feel the atmosphere, you need to spend several hours here. It is noteworthy that the temple has two names: Lakshmi Narayan (folk) and Birla Mandir (official). It turned out that the temple was erected at the expense of the Birla family under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, and the ancient sanctuary of Lakshmi served as a place for construction. In those days, Mahatma Gandhi actively fought against the social stratification of society and the temple was supposed to act as a symbol of the absence of caste differences.
