Unfortunately, the fountain was under renovation during my visit. But I did photograph a significant portion of its elements. The Fountain of the Calamo, also known as the Fountain of the Thirteen Streams, was named after the Greek word for reed, as it was once located in marshland.
The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it is known that in 1426 the fountain was equipped with collecting tanks, and in 1438 it was used by the wool merchants' guild.
The fountain has thirteen streams, twelve of which are covered with bronze masks depicting satyrs and fauns. The middle spout is covered with a stone sculpture depicting a knight on horseback, the emblem of Ancona.
Behind the fountain is a pool that was once used as a drinking fountain, built on Roman stone paving.
The fountain was once fed by a large tank hidden behind a wall and filled with water from Mount Conero. Today, the cistern is empty and can be reached through a passage next to the fountain.
According to tradition, a traveler who wanted to return to the city had to drink water from the fountain. There is even a local proverb: "If you drink from this spring, you will definitely return here. "
