Archbishop's Palace

Italy, Florence
The Archbishop's Palace is located in the historic center of Florence and is an unremarkable late 16th-century building with cafes, a pharmacy and shops on the ground floor. The Archbishop's Palace was badly damaged by fire in 1533 and partially restored at the end of the 16th century. An interesting fact: until 1895, the building was 8 meters closer to the adjacent Baptistery of San Giovanni, but by decision of the authorities, the facade was destroyed and, thus, the palace was “pushed” back in order to expand the area. Inside the building is a beautiful courtyard with large arches, Doric columns and an upper open gallery formed by Ionic columns.

The house of the Bishop of Florence has been located in this city since at least the VIII century. The residence of the bishop (from 1419 - the archbishop) consisted of two houses, in the XV century connected by a passage. Ancient houses burned down as a result of the great fire of 1533. Construction of a new palace designed by Giovanni Antonio Dossio began in 1573. The customer was Archbishop Alessandro di Ottaviano Medici. In 1583, on the corner of the palace was installed his coat of arms by Alessandro di Giovanni - the coat of arms of the Medici family with church attributes.
