Plaza Santa Croce

Piazza Santa Croce is named after the famous Basilica of Santa Croce, which is very close by. The square is located in the historical center of Florence and used to be a venue for various competitions and fairs. The square is surrounded by small houses with old facades, various restaurants and cafes. On weekends, there are costumed performances and a market selling local delicacies and souvenirs.

Santa Croce Square
Of course, the temple is the main object of the square. But there is much more interesting. Next to the temple is a large monument of Dante made of white marble. Once the Florentines drove him out of the city, and now glorify him. The fountain, designed by architect and artist Pierre Maria Baldi, appeared on the square in 1673. The new pool, lined with very beautiful polychrome marble, appeared in 1816, when another architect, Giuseppe Del Rosso, was commissioned to restore and modernize the fountain.→

Plaza Santa Croce
A beautiful square surrounded by even more beautiful palaces. In the Middle Ages, tournaments and football matches were held here. Until now, once a year on June 24, the famous Florentine historical football is held here. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get to football, I realized it late (somewhere in a week), ticket prices were no longer real. Maybe you are more lucky, they say the spectacle is most interesting. Watching the fireworks in the evening. As it starts to get dark, take a seat on one of the bridges.→
