Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin

Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin
Italy, Rome
The Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin was built in the 6th century on the site of a pagan temple dedicated to Hercules. The church is located on the left bank of the Tiber, not far from the Temple of Portun and the Circus Maximus. In the VIII century, the Basilica of St. Mary received the prefix Cosmedin to its name, which means “beautiful”, for its unique mosaics and rich interior decoration. The church is known for its Byzantine-style openwork bell tower and the antique marble mask “The Mouth of Truth”.
