Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria

Santa Maria della Vittoria, Our Lady of Victory
Italy, Rome
The church of Santa Maria della Vittoria was built by the Order of Barefoot Carmelites from 1605 as the church of St. Paul. However, after the victory of the Catholic League over the Protestants in 1620, the church was renamed in honor of the Virgin Mary. The temple was entirely designed by the Italian architect Carlo Maderna. The basilica is known for the splendor of the decoration of the Cornaro Chapel, in particular the altar group "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa", the work of the sculptor Giovanni Bernini.
