Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri

Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, Basilica of the Virgin Mary
Italy, Rome
The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, angels and martyrs, and is located in Piazza della Repubblica, near the National Museum of Rome. The church was built on the site of the ancient ruins of the baths of Diocletian, presumably according to the design of Michelangelo. Construction was completed after his death. Inside the basilica is decorated with antique columns, classical ornaments, sculptures and paintings. Italian artist Salvator Rosa and architect Carlo Maratta are buried here.

The holy fathers instructed Michelangelo to take care of the transformation of the Baths of Diocletian into a Christian church. But he did not manage to see the project finished. The structure is monumental, look, half an hour for inspection will be enough.
