Museum Altar of Peace Augustus

Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Museum of the Ara Pacis, Altar of Peace
Italy, Rome
The Peace Altar Museum was designed by Richard Meyer and was opened after seven years of work in April 2006. The main and only exhibit of the museum is the Altar of Peace itself, which was erected in honor of the return of Emperor Augustus from Spain in 13 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the altar was flooded by the Tiber. In 1859, thorough excavations were undertaken, which made it possible to reconstruct the altar of Augustus. However, the structure was not installed in its original location, Mausoleum of Augustus. To protect the fragile remains of the altar from the weather, a museum was built.
