Mausoleum of Augustus

Mausoleo di Augusto, Mausoleum of Augustus
Italy, Rome
The Mausoleum of Augustus is a family tomb built by Octavian Augustus on the Campus Martius in Rome. The construction was started in 28 BC, at the base was a cylindrical structure, its top was crowned with a statue of the emperor. Urns with the ashes of members of the imperial family were kept inside: the emperor himself, his wife Livia, sister Octavia, nephew Marcellus, as well as the emperors Tiberius, Claudius and Nerva were buried here. With the fall of the Roman Empire, the mausoleum fell into disrepair, and in the 8th century it was plundered. In 1926, archaeological excavations were carried out, and the remains of the building were restored.

The ashes of Emperor Augustus rested here. At one time, the mausoleum was a grandiose structure, now there is little left. The obelisks that stood in front of the entrance now adorn the Quirinal and Esquiline. I put 5, as restoration work was carried out, now I don’t know.
