Lake Nemi

Lago di Nemi, Nemorensis Lacus
Italy, Rome
Lake Nemi is a small lake 30 kilometers from Rome. In ancient Rome, the lake was considered sacred. The villa of Emperor Caligula was located here, where he, presumably, was buried. Caligula built pleasure ships on the lake, and some of them are still found at the bottom of the lake.

If you are tired of the crowds of tourists and the noise of Rome, I advise you to go on a country walk. Just 30 kilometers from Rome, there is a beautiful lake with an interesting history, which in ancient times was called Diana's Mirror. And this lake is also famous for the fact that the ships of Emperor Caligula sailed on it. (There is a film about them on Discovery) On the shore of the lake there is a museum dedicated to ships. (I do not advise you to go, the collection is small there) The small village of Nemi will surprise you with delicious strawberries.
