Mount Etna

Mount Etna, Mount Etna
Italy, Sicily
Etna is an active stratovolcano located on the east coast of Sicily, near the cities of Messina and Catania. It is the highest active volcano in Europe.

Theoretically, climbing Etna is possible from any direction, in practice there are three main routes: southern, eastern and northern.

The southern one passes through the base of Rifugio Sapienza (1900 meters), where an ordinary suburban bus runs from the city of Catania via Nicolosi once a day. From Rifugio Sapienza to La Montagnola (altitude 2500 meters) there is a cable car, as well as excursions on specially equipped four-wheel drive off-road buses.

The eastern route passes through the village of Zafferana Etnea and also leads to Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 m.

The northern route passes through the towns of Piedimonte Etneo, Linguaglossa and leads to the base of Piano Provenzana.

Self-guided hiking is possible. Hikers can go both along the bus roads and straight ahead - subject to good visibility. Strong wind, rain, fog are possible at the top of the mountain.
