Mole Antonelliana

Mole Antonelliana, Mole Antonelliana, Tower of Mole Antonelliana
Italy, Turin
Mole Antonelliana - one of the symbols of Turin - a high-rise building with a square dome, located in the center of the former capital of Italy, was built by the architect Alessandro Antonelli. The building-tower was founded as the main synagogue of Italy, in 1863, under certain funding for the height of the temple of 66 meters. But Antonelli, having decided to surpass other architects, arbitrarily increased the height of the building to 167.5 meters, which led to an increase in the construction budget by almost 3 times, and the high sharp spire of the synagogue did not correspond to Jewish religious traditions. As a result, in 1869 the Jewish community refused funding, and work was suspended for several years.
Still, the tower was completed by the already fairly aged Antonelli, who did not live just a year before the completion of construction in 1889. From 1908 to 1938, the Mole Antonelliana building housed the Risorgimento Museum, dedicated to the national liberation movement of the Italians and the unification of Italy. Since 2000, it has housed one of the most important film museums in the world, the National Film Museum, one of the 20 most visited museums in the country. The museum collection contains 7,200 films, music archives, 300,000 posters, costumes for films, 20,000 books.

The Mole Antonelliana building is depicted on the Italian 2 cent coin, its outline became the logo of the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. Here is an observation deck for exploring the city with all its attractions.

The spire above the unique square dome in the center of Turin is visible from afar - this is Mole Antonelliana designed by Alessandro Antonelli with the National Museum of Cinema. You can go up to the observation deck to see the city with all the sights, but the view from this symbol of Turin without the symbol itself is not very interesting. The panorama with the spire is much better. The domed Museo Nazionale del Cinema houses one of the world's largest collections of films dating back to the early days of this art form.
