Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco, St Mark's Square
Italy, Venice
Piazza San Marco is the main city square in Venice, Italy. Logically, it consists of two parts: Piazzetta - the platform from the Grand Canal to the bell tower, and directly Piazza (square).

The square was formed in the 9th century as a small space in front of St. Mark's Cathedral. In 1777 it was expanded to its present size. The architectural dominant of the square is the Doge's Palace and, located at some distance, the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica with a logetta. Around the square, if you look counterclockwise from the Grand Canal, rise: Columns of St. Mark and St. Theodore, Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Cathedral, St. Mark's Clock Tower, Old and New Procurations, on the ground floor of which there are several cafes, including the famous Café Florian, Ala Napoleonica, San Marco Library.

Was here in the summer. A lot of tourists walk around the square. Their number can, perhaps, equate to the number of pigeons. I even brought grain from home to feed the Venetian pigeons in Piazza San Marco. Also, what is very interesting, by lunch time the area was half filled with water. This once again confirms the theory of scientists that soon the fairy tale city may go under water due to such a huge flow of tourists.

This is how Napoleon called the most famous, and, in fact, the only square in Venice - Piazza di San Marco. But the view that opens up to a traveler arriving at the square from the side of the Venetian lagoon, and which is considered the hallmark of Venice, is not a view of Piazza, but of Piazzetta di San Marco (a small square between San Marco and the canal, which Italians usually call Piazzetta for short). – “Little Square”). In place of the Piazzetta, there was once an inner harbor, which was later filled up and turned into a square.

San Marco - one of the central districts of Venice, named after St. Mark, the patron saint of the city. On the square is the famous Cathedral of St. Mark (in the evening, the facade is very beautifully lit). Nearby is the Doge's Palace with its arches. Clock tower with Moors. Café Florin is the first cafe in Italy, but it still has many visitors today. It is better to come here early in the morning or in the evening, there are fewer tourists, but the architecture is still the same. If there is no desire to stand in line and get into the basilica or the palace itself, then you should definitely take wonderful pictures on the embankment.

I join all the laudatory odes of St. Mark's Square. In the evening, sitting in a cafe, listening to classical music, is simply charming. The first time I was in Venice by bus tour (sightseeing tour + 2 hours of free time and Good bye), and I walked for my own pleasure only when I arrived on my own.

Stunning and stunning architecture, a deafening diversity of guides, tour guides, tourists and a crazy number of people per unit area - my three most vivid impressions of St. Mark's Square : ) Therefore, if you have the opportunity - come here early in the morning in order to fully enjoy the beauty of the surroundings! P. S. Although the city authorities officially banned feeding pigeons on San Marco, the birds have not disappeared from the square and still willingly eat bread from the hands of tourists.

I have been to Venice several times and every time I couldn't help admiring this square. The first time we left Venice on a cruise and passed San Marco along the Giudecca Canal. We were standing on the upper deck of a cruise ship, the Venetian roofs were somewhere below us, crowds of people escorted us from this square, everyone waved their hands. Night San Marco. Or rather, in the evening - a sea of people, several orchestras are located on the square, and a tarantella sounds.

I was lucky to see San Marco in all its glory during the day and immersed in the velvet of the Italian night. I will describe only a few places on it. Doge's Palace. The tour with a guide was not enough, it is obvious that 35 euros is a little expensive for a bus tour. I'm walking on my own. Ticket 16 euros I pay by card. It's still morning and there are no tourists. I look around the courtyard and the famous staircase. Photos are not allowed in the palace itself. Some of the stairs can be photographed.

Piazza San Marco is a place of extraordinary beauty in Venice. This is the main square in the city. Here you can see the columns of St. Mark and St. Theodore, the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Cathedral and the Clock Tower of St. Mark. And the kids will love that in this area they can see a lot of pigeons
