Silver mines of Kongsberg

Silver mines of Kongsberg, Kongsberg Sølvverk
Norway, Kongsberg
Silver mines are located 8 kilometers southwest of the Norwegian town of Kongsberg. Silver mining on an industrial scale began in the 17th century, German engineers were involved. In 1957, the mine closed due to unprofitability and the site of the Kongsberg Silver Mines building is now the Museum of the History of Mining in Norway.

You get into the trolley and drive up the hill, through the tunnel inside which you drive with a roar a couple of kilometers deep (ear plugs are issued), and you find yourself in the heart of an already inactive huge silver mine, discovered back in the 17th century. Walk with a guide through the tunnels (in which, by the way, it is always +6°C), listen to a story in excellent English, and look at the insides, rocks and realistic models of how the process went. You will see, for example, a working wooden elevator as far back as 1881, moving workers between levels.
