Market Square in the Old Town

Rynek Starego Miasta
Poland, Warsaw
The Old Town Market Square is the central part of the Old Town of Warsaw. The square was built along with the creation of Warsaw at the end of the 13th century. For a long time it was the central place of the city, where political performances were held and trade was conducted. The buildings of the Market Square were repeatedly subjected to fires and destruction. In the 20th century, many buildings on the square were restored.

A market square has existed on this site since the 13th century. It was completely destroyed after the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising (1944), then it was long and meticulously restored according to the images left from pre-war times. Today it is a lively tourist destination with many cafes and restaurants. In the very center of the square is a sculpture of the Warsaw Mermaid. This is a symbol of the city, which is also depicted on the coat of arms of Warsaw. According to legend, once upon a time a Mermaid, sailing from the sea, came out of the water to rest on the sandy shore.
