This magnificent, monumental and at the same time aerial monastery arouses our admiration from the first minutes of its visit. It owes its beauty to the Portuguese King Manuel I, who spared no expense on its construction and decoration and found his last rest in the magnificent walls of this monastery. By the way, Jerome's unique style was called "Manuelino", as if paying tribute to this king.

The monastery was built in the 16th century. for the Order of St. Jerome in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the patronage of Portuguese sailors and success in opening new trade routes. The interior of the monastery is as luxurious as its magnificent carved facades. This whole extensive complex consists of a church, buildings for monastic cells and a magnificent courtyard.
The vaults of the church are supported by slender octagonal carved columns, its walls are decorated with several stained glass windows, and near its entrance are the sarcophagi of the poet Luis de Camoens and the great traveler Vasco da Gama.

Entrance to the church is free, and on the territory of the monastery - paid (10 euros). In the west wing of the monastery, where the monks' cells used to be, there are now two interesting museums - the Maritime Museum and the National Archaeological Museum, and across the street from it - the Monument to the Discoverers and the Belen Tower.

The Jerome Monastery is one of the must-see places in Lisbon, it directly "breathes" the history and romance of great discoveries.
