Construction began under King Manuel I in 1501, after the return of Vasco da Gama from India, and was financed mainly by income from the spice trade. After the closing of the monastery in 1833, the building passed to the state, at present the complex is open to the public. The Museum of Archeology and Ethnography is located in the western wing of the monastery. Kings Manuel I and Juan III, the famous traveler Vasco da Gama, outstanding Portuguese poets Camões and Fernando Pessoa are buried in the monastery.

This magnificent, monumental and at the same time aerial monastery arouses our admiration from the first minutes of its visit. It owes its beauty to the Portuguese King Manuel I, who spared no expense on its construction and decoration and found his last rest in the magnificent walls of this monastery. By the way, Jerome's unique style was called "Manuelino", as if paying tribute to this king. The monastery was built in the 16th century. for the Order of St. Jerome in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the patronage of Portuguese sailors and success in opening new trade routes.
