Monument to the discoverers

Monument to the Discoveries
Portugal, Lisbon
The Monument to the Discoverers or the Monument of Discovery is one of the visiting cards of Lisbon, located on the Belen embankment of the Tagus River. The monument, 56 meters high, in the form of a caravel, was opened in 1960, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, whose nine-meter statue crowns the prow of the ship. Under the stone sails are 32 seven-meter sculptures of figures from the Age of Discovery, when Portugal was the leading maritime power. There is an elevator inside the monument, where you can go up to the observation deck. Above you can see a mosaic depicting a wind rose with a diameter of 50 meters and a map of the world, from here you can see a panoramic view of the Belem region, the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem Tower, the Tagus River and its embankment.

I came to see both on a 2-story tourist bus (from Pombal Square) and on a river boat. near the monument - a map of the world is laid out indicating the directions of the discoveries made by the Portuguese. Lovely
