Praca do Comercio, Praça do Comercio, Palace Square, Terreiro do Paço, Commerce Square
Portugal, Lisbon
Market Square is the largest square in the capital of Portugal, located on the embankment of the Tagus River. Before the devastating earthquake of 1755, the royal palace of Ribeira was located here, so the square was called the Palace Square. During the subsequent reconstruction of the city on the site of the ruins, Praça do Comércio - Market Square was created. In its center is a bronze equestrian statue of King José I, the work of the Portuguese sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. In 1873, the Arc de Triomphe was opened as a symbol of the restoration of the city after the earthquake. The arch is crowned with allegorical figures of Glory, Genius and Valor; sculptures of prominent Portuguese and figures representing the Tagus and Douro, the two largest rivers of Portugal, are installed on its facade. Today, the Commerce Square with the adjoining pier Cais das Colunas is a favorite vacation spot for visitors and residents of Lisbon.

Curious, but not pompous. The first impression is that it is somewhat similar to Piazza San Marco (Venice), but more modest. It seemed to me that in the evening it looks more interesting due to good lighting. *maybe I'm wrong.

Commerce Square is the largest and most iconic square in the city, located on the banks of the Tagus River. This place has long been the center of power and important moments of the city life of Lisbon: executions of the Inquisition and military parades, festivities and public punishments were held here, and in the 20th century it even became the site of the assassination of King Carlos I and his son Prince Luis Felipe by revolutionaries. Praç a do Comercio became one of the symbols of the city, so it was one of the first to be rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755.
