Castle of Saint George

Castelo de Sao Jorge, Fortress of Saint George
Portugal, Lisbon
Castle of St. George, built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles on a high hill, is visible from anywhere in Lisbon. The place where the castle is located has served as a fortress for the Romans and Visigoths since ancient times, it was the residence of the Mauritanian emir. The first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, who with the help of the crusaders in 1147 captured the castle from the Moors, turned it into his residence and named it in honor of St. George, the patron saint of knights and crusades. In 1511, the residence of the king was transferred to the Baixe Palace, and the fortress of St. George served as a prison, arsenal or theater. A devastating earthquake in 1755 turned the castle into ruins. By order of President Salazar in 1938, the castle was restored, a park with olive trees and oaks, with peacocks was laid out inside, monuments to Afonso I and Manuel I were erected. An excellent view of Lisbon opens from the fortress towers.

The fortress of Sã o Jorge, towering over the capital of Portugal, was founded in the 5th century by the Visigoths, from this hill you can see the whole city. The Moors who captured Iberia rebuilt it into the Alcazar - a Moorish castle. When the Moors were expelled from the peninsula, Afonso took it by storm. Enriques in 1147, he turned the fortress into his residence and gave it its current name. Here Vasco da Gama was solemnly welcomed upon his return from a voyage to India in 1499. Then the fortress was abandoned, for some time there was a prison, it fell into disrepair and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755.
