Church of Saint Francis

Igreja de São Francisco, Church of Saint Francis, Monument Church of S. Francisco de Assis
Portugal, Porto
The Church of St. Francis is one of the most amazing churches in Porto, causing true delight and admiration for all its visitors. It is located in the historical center of the city, near the Douro River. The foundation of the church was laid in the 13th century, but its construction lasted several centuries and was completed only in the 15th century. with the help and support of King Ferdinand I.
The appearance of the temple clearly shows Gothic features, but its main facade is not particularly expressive and is decorated only with a large round window and a granite statue of St. Francis of Assisi. In the XVII-XVIII centuries. The interior of the church was carefully decorated with gilding and wood carvings. The baroque interior of this temple impresses with its rich decor and luxury. The walls, altars, ceiling and columns of the church of San Francisco are covered with gilding and it is even hard to imagine that more than 300 kg of gold was used to decorate them. The most memorable element of the interior decoration of the temple is the altar with the composition "The Tree of Jesse", which represents the genealogy of Christ in the form of individual sculptures. The church-monument of St. Francis also includes a museum, a Reception House and underground catacombs with burials of citizens of the 18th-19th centuries.
Today, church services are no longer held here, and the temple operates as a museum.

There are many interesting buildings and religious buildings in Porto, among which the Church of St. Francis deserves special attention. Outside, the church looks like an ordinary Gothic building, but inside it hides the most unusual and richest interior in Porto. The church was founded in the XIII century, but was finally completed only in the XV century. The interior of the temple in the Baroque style makes a stunning impression: after all, almost all the walls, columns and ceilings are covered with gilded panels with wooden carvings.
