Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira, Regaleira Manor, Palácio da Regaleira, Palace of the Millionaire Monteiro
Portugal, Sintra
The palace and park complex of Quinta da Regaleira is a stunningly beautiful, mysterious and magical place. For a long time the complex was privately owned, until it was bought by the Sintra city hall and since 1998 the Regaleira estate became available for visiting. It reflects the philosophical, esoteric and mystical views of one of its owners - Carvalho Monteiro. On the vast territory of the estate in the early XX century. mysterious buildings were built that hide symbols related to alchemy, freemasonry, poetry, the order of the Templars and the Rosicrucians. The architecture of the complex is eclectic - there are elements of Gothic and Romanesque, Renaissance and Manueline. On the territory of Quinta da Regaleira there is a small neo-Gothic palace, a Catholic chapel and a park with lakes, grottoes, fountains, various sculptures and underground labyrinths. The park in the estate appears to be the "Garden of Eden", with many paths, symbols, towers, benches, caves with underground tunnels, statues and pavilions. But the most famous and mysterious part of the park is the "Well of Initiation", which goes 27 meters deep and consists of 9 levels, symbolizing the 9 circles of Dante.

Having inherited a considerable fortune and increased it by trade in coffee and precious stones, Antó nio Augusto Corvalho Monteiro acquired an estate in Sintra near Lisbon at the end of the 19th century. There he decided to embody on Earth the idea of the Garden of Eden. Decoration Quinta da Regaleira - The palace with columns twisted according to the Portuguese tradition like ropes, stairs, window frames and secret passages was built by the Italian architect Luigi Manini. Later, Monteiro joined the Masonic lodge, which prompted him to make a secluded chapel, an intricate gazebo, grottoes and wells with secret passages for initiation rites in the lodge in the park of the estate.
