National Palace of Sintra

Palácio Nacional de Sintra, Sintra National Palace, Palácio da Vila, Paso Real
Portugal, Sintra
The National Palace of Sintra - the former summer residence of the Portuguese kings in the XV-XIX centuries - is located in the center of the old city. It was built in the Moorish style in the 15th century for King John I, partially rebuilt in the Gothic style, completed by his great-grandson, Manuel I in the 16th century in the Manueline style. Since the founding of the Republic in 1910, the palace has become a national monument, and in 1940 it was restored according to the design of the architect Raoul Lino. The oldest surviving building on the territory of the palace is the chapel of the XIII-XIV centuries. Among the historically significant rooms are the Hall of Forty, decorated with images of 136 birds, the Hall of Swans painted on the ceiling, the Arab Hall, the Armorial Hall with 72 coats of arms of kings and their nobles. The National Palace of Sintra has the world's most complete collection of azulejo tiles. Together with the old town and two other palaces of Sintra, the National Palace is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Palacio Nacional Royal Palace is located in the heart of the city of Sintra, it stands out from the rest of the city's buildings with its huge chimneys. The palace was the summer residence of many Portuguese kings and witnessed important historical events of this kingdom. It was here that the kings were informed about the successful expedition of Vasco da Gama to India and the discovery of Brazil. The Royal Palace was rebuilt many times depending on the tastes and passions of the kings who lived in it.
