Minaret Kesik

Kesik Minare, Broken Minaret, Broken Minaret, Broken Minaret
Turkey, Antalya
In ancient times, an ancient temple towered on this site, which was turned by the Byzantines into the Church of the Virgin Mary in the 400s. It is said that an icon painted by St. Luke himself was kept in it, and magnificent patterns of stone carving served as a salary for it. In 1361-1373, during the occupation of the city by the Cypriot knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the church served Catholic Christians for some time, and then returned to Byzantine Orthodox Christians.
In the 15th century, the Ottoman prince Sehzade Korkut turned the church into a Friday mosque. At the end of the XIV century, after the capture of the city, the Turks erected the Great Ottoman Mosque in Antalya. In 1480, Leonardo da Vinci described a major earthquake that hit the city, during which the Great Mosque was completely destroyed. For this reason, the Christian temple was turned into a Muslim one. In honor of the prince, the building was named Korkut Mosque or Cami-i Kebir. Today only picturesque ruins remind of the mosque. A minaret was built next to the mosque. In 1851, a fire broke out in the Kaleici region, during which the minaret was severely damaged - its upper part seemed to be cut off. Since then, it has often been referred to as the Broken or Cut Minaret.
