Myndos Gate

Myndos Gate,
Turkey, Bodrum
The Myndos Gate, being part of the city walls surrounding ancient Halicarnassos, served as the western entrance to the city. They got their name in honor of Myndos, the ancient city towards which they were turned. The modern name of the gate - "Diktiri" or "Dikduru" is translated as "standing straight."
The city walls were erected to protect the city in 364 BC, during the reign of King Mausolus. Built in the western part of the bay of Halicarnassos, they stretched for seven kilometers. Their borders were the castles of Salmajis to the west and the island of Zephyrion to the east.
Now the middle part of the Myndos Gate is completely destroyed, but the ruins of its other two parts, once made of huge and heavy square stone blocks, still exist. Archaeological excavations were carried out at the foot of the northern and southern towers of the Myndos Gate, as well as in the vicinity of Bodrum. These excavations unearthed domed tombs from the Hellenistic and Roman periods with terracotta sarcophagi.

We decided to go to Bodrum for one reason: to visit as many historical places as possible, because there are a great many of them there, on the coast of the Aegean Sea. The first place we visited was the famous MYNDOS GATE. The gates or gates of Myndos are the only ones that have survived to this day. This is the western entrance from ancient Halicarnassus. They led to the city of Mindos, now Gumusluk. The name comes from the word gyumush (silver), because there were silver mines nearby.
