Rock monastery of St. Onuphrius in the village of Rukomysh

Cave monastery Rukomysh, Pecherny Monastery
Ukraine, Buchach
The rock monastery of St. Onuphrius in the village of Rukomysh is a cult structure and a cave-temple complex of the 13th century. In search of shelter from the invasion of the Mongols and Tatars, Orthodox monks carved caves in these rocks. Their basis was natural caves, which were expanded manually, and also grottoes-cells for worship were erected here. The height of the rocks is 20 meters. In the grottoes of the caves there are altars with icons and stone sculptures of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and other saints. Nearby is a century-old church and a waterfall, according to pilgrims, with healing water. Refers to the monuments of archeology of Ukraine.

Rukomysh is another interesting place in the vicinity of Buchach. This is a small village with a population of only 400 inhabitants, known for its ancient rock monastery on the banks of the river Strypa. The first written mention of Rukomysh dates back to 1453. But it is believed that the first monks appeared here in the late thirteenth century, fleeing the Tatar-Mongol invasion that engulfed Kievan Rus. It seems that at that time the monks built a chapel of St. Boris and Gleb on the top of the mountain and dug two caves: one for worship, the other for housing.
