Nicholas Church

Mykolaiv Church
Ukraine, Kamianets-Podilskyi
The Nicholas Church in the Old Town was built by the Armenian community of Kamenetz-Podolsky in 1398 on the site of an older temple. Defense requirements influenced the appearance of the temple. The building of the church has thick walls with loopholes, surrounded by a stone wall, devoid of any decor. In 1495, a large stone church was built in the city for the enlarged Armenian colony, also named after St. Nicholas. The old church was assigned to the new temple and became known as the Annunciation Chapel.
During the twenty-seven years of Turkish rule, most of the Armenians left Kamenets, the temple fell into decay. Its revival began immediately after the return of the city to Poland in 1699, at the expense of the Armenian merchant Bogdan Litynovich. A bell tower was erected, and an Armenian miraculous icon of the Mother of God was placed in the church. The Annunciation Chapel was given the name of St. Nicholas in 1811. Church of St. Nicholas was open to parishioners until 1962, then it was used to store part of the archive of the Khmelnytsky region. In 1991-97, restoration work was carried out in the Nicholas Church, transferred to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
